For most holidaymakers travelling from the UK, the gateway to Füssen is Munich. Füssen in located 90 kilometres south west of the Bavarian capital and is only 5 kilometres from the Austrian border.
Voted the best airport in Europe in 2006 (for the second year running), Munich’s ultra-modern Franz-Joseph-Strauss-Flughaven lies some 30 kilometres north of the city. The quickest and easiest way to get from here to Füssen is by train. The airport train station (München Flughafen Terminal) is situated in the basement level of the common area (between Terminals 1 and 2, and well sign posted from both). From here, you can catch a regional train direct to Füssen Bahnhof. Trains depart roughly every hour (though they are more frequent in the middle of the day) and a single fare costs about €26.
Füssen itself is small enough to be easily walkable, but Neuschwanstein, where to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles are located, lies 5 kilometres to the south east. Buses run regularly there from Füssen train station. Even if you take the bus, it’s another 20 minutes’ walk up the hill once you get to Neuschwanstein.
