Füssen is Bavaria’s highest town and the quintessential romantic Alpine village. Surrounded by the famous Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles to the North and Lake Forggensee to the South, the town enjoys a quite breathtaking location.

Fussen’s 700-year history dates back to the Swabian Prince Bishops of Augsberg who built some of the largest castles in Bavaria to protect this mountainous region from foreign invaders. Ironically, the two famous castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, which attract thousands of tourists each year, were completely redesigned and rebuilt much more recently in the 19th Century. Both castles are the result of the romantic obsessions of a succession of Bavarian Kings and Princes, notably Maximilian II and Ludwig II. With their lavish interiors and spectacular views, the two castles are well worth the visit.
Winter is the low season for Fussen but the winter sports opportunities are really worth discovering. The Vitales Land extends beyond the Austrian border and includes 82 cable railways and ski-lifts. For those who prefer a winters stroll, there are 50km of snow-cleared hiking paths to explore.
